Kamrup (Assam) [India], September 25 (ANI): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday met a delegation of corporators from Telangana’s Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) at Lok Sewa Bhawan in Guwahati.
The meeting was part of a study tour undertaken by the corporators to Assam.
Chief Minister Sarma extended a warm welcome to the delegation and engaged in discussions on various civic issues related to urban governance.
During the meeting, Chief Minister Sarma shared Guwahati’s experiences in managing legacy waste, improving civic amenities, and solid waste management.
The corporators expressed their satisfaction with the visit, stating they had gained valuable insights into urban governance from Guwahati Municipal Corporation’s practices.
Additionally, Sarma conveyed his goodwill to the approximately 60 corporators, who represented BJP, Congress, and BRS, and sent his greetings to the people of Telangana through them.
Earlier today, Chief Minister Sarma chaired a meeting with the All Assam Students Union (AASU) leadership to discuss the recommendations of the Justice (Retd) Biplab Sarma Committee regarding the implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Sarma announced that the second phase of discussions with AASU would take place on October 25. He further clarified that the state government would not implement Clause 6 of the Assam Accord in Barak Valley and Sixth Schedule areas without the consent of the local populations.
“Today, we engaged with the All Assam Students’ Union on the implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord. We reviewed the recommendations of the Justice (Retd) Biplab Sarma Committee, which can be implemented solely by the state government. We made it clear that these recommendations will not be applied in Barak Valley and Sixth Schedule areas without their consent,” Sarma stated.
Clause 6 of the Assam Accord mandates the protection, preservation, and promotion of the cultural, social, and linguistic identity of the Assamese people through appropriate constitutional, legislative, and administrative safeguards. (ANI)
