New Delhi [India], May 27 (ANI): Congress MP Imran Masood on Tuesday firmly rejected any notion of dependency on the Samajwadi Party (SP) for seat-sharing in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections in 2027, asserting that the Congress party is not a “beggar” that will ask for a seat from the SP.
Masood’s statement was made in response to reports surrounding Congress’s aim for a better seat-sharing deal with SP for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh polls.
“…Hum koi bhikhari hai jo Samajwadi Party se bheekh mangenge? (Are we beggars who will beg from the Samajwadi Party)…” the Congress MP said.
He underscored a growing assertiveness within the Congress party as it focuses on strengthening its grassroots organisation and prioritising the ambitions of its workers.
The Saharanpur MP asserted that the election would be fought for the respect of Congress workers and that the strategy would not be based on the formula for the Lok Sabha elections.
“We are engaged in strengthening our organisation at the booth level. The ambitions of our leaders and our activists are political. We cannot suppress their desires. We will have to respect their wishes as well; then we can strengthen our organisation… The party will decide on the coalition and how the alliance will take place. But I have great respect for the Congress workers and Congress leaders and will fight for it… The party will decide the formula, but it will not be the same as the Lok Sabha elections. The party will also decide what formula is needed. We are engaged in our preparation… We have no shortage of leaders. Everyone will contest elections with strength,” Imran Masood added.
Uttar Pradesh will wittness next Assembly elections in 2027 between two most prominent parties i.e., Bharatiya Janata Party and Samajwadi Party. The Congress is likely to contest the polls in alliance with SP.
In the current session, the Uttar Pradesh Assembly has 403 elected members, 258 of whom are from the Bhartiya Janata Party, 107 from the Samajwadi Party, and 13 from the Apna Dal.
In addition to that, Rastriya Lok Dal has nine; the Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party has six; the Nirbal Indian Shoshit Hamara Aam Dal has five; Jansatta Dal Loktantrik and Congress have two; and the Bahujan Samaj Party has only one representative. (ANI)
