Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], August 29 (ANI): Instead of “wasting their energy” on ‘Nabanna Abhijan’, BJP leaders should ask Prime Minister Narendra Modi to bring an anti-rape law in India, the TMC said on Thursday.
Notably, ‘Paschim Banga Chatra Samaj’ on Tuesday organised the ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ over the recent rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
“Instead of wasting their energy on ‘Nabanna Abhiyan’, BJP should hold a ‘Sansad Abhiyan’ and demand that PM Narendra Modi introduce an anti-rape law. Shri Abhishek Banerjee made it clear: if Centre keeps dragging its feet, we’ll take the fight for justice straight to Delhi!” TMC posted on X.
In the same post, the party uploaded a video message by TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee.
“I want to tell the leaders of the BJP who organised Nabanna Abhijan and demanded the resignation of the Chief Minister, to go on a protest to the parliament and ask Prime Minister Narendra Modi to bring about an anti-rape law in India,” Banerjee said.
He further questioned the central government on their overnight announcements on demonetisation and lockdown and “why can’t they introduce an anti-rape law?”
“Overnight the government can announce demonetisation; overnight they can announce lockdown; overnight they can pass an ordinance to monopolise power from the democratically elected Delhi government; then why can’t they introduce an anti-rape law? We will take the fight to Delhi. You started it, but we will end it,” he added.
Earlier on Tuesday, a protest march to West Bengal Secretariat ‘Nabanna’ was organised by the ‘Paschim Banga Chatra Samaj’ and other organisations, which aimed to protest the recent rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor in Kolkata.
The rally termed “Nabanna Abhiyan” started from the College Square in the capital of West Bengal, amid heightened security around the West Bengal state secretariat with protestors gathering at the Santragachi area in Howrah.
Later, the police hosed protestors with water cannons as they climbed atop police barricades, clashed with police personnel and broke the barricades at Santragachi in Howrah during the protest march.
All these came following the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata’s R G Kar Medical College and Hospital premises, which sparked nationwide outrage and since then several protests have been staged demanding justice for the victim. The trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall on August 9. (ANI)
