Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], September 5 (ANI): BJP West Bengal MP Jyotirmoy Singh Mahato wrote a letter to the Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, on Thursday requesting the CJI to expedite the trial proceedings of the cases related to the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.
In his letter, Mahato wrote, “I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the Hon’ble Supreme Court for taking suo motu cognisance of the tragic and heinous rape and murder of a young doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata… However, I humbly request that the proceedings in this case be expedited. The delay in hearings and the postponement of the case are causing immense disappointment and frustration among the people of West Bengal and across the nation.”
He further requested action be taken against the Kolkata Commissioner of Police, Vineet Kumar Goyal and other officials for their alleged involvement in tampering with evidence and obstructing justice.
He also accused them of “mishandling of evidence, the undue haste in certain procedural matters, and the overall lack of transparency have all contributed to a growing sense of injustice.”
“The role of the Kolkata Police in this case has been deeply troubling… The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Vineet Kumar Goyal, has been at the centre of this controversy… His role in these cases has brought disrepute not only to the police force but also to the administration of justice in West Bengal… The mishandling of evidence, the undue haste in certain procedural matters, and the overall lack of transparency have all contributed to a growing sense of injustice. In light of these concerns, I earnestly request that the Hon’ble Supreme Court consider making the alleged police officials, including the Commissioner of Police, and others involved in tampering with evidence and obstructing justice, accountable for their actions,” he added.
On August 9, the body of the trainee doctor was found in the seminar room of the hospital. The incident sparked nationwide protests.
A civic volunteer was arrested shortly after the trainee doctor’s body was discovered. The CBI has also arrested the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, for alleged financial misconduct at the medical establishment.
The gruesome incident also led to the West Bengal Assembly passing unanimously the ‘Aparajita Woman and Child Bill (West Bengal Criminal Laws and Amendment) 2024’ on Tuesday.
The bill has provisions for increased punishment for crimes against women. The bill requires that a probe into rape cases be concluded within 24 days of the initial report. (ANI)
