Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], August 25 (ANI): Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar on Sunday called for an investigation into Mamata Banerjee in connection with the Kolkata rape-murder case.
“There should be an investigation against the West Bengal health minister. Mamata Banerjee’s phone should be seized, and an inquiry conducted,” he told ANI.
Majumdar also announced that the BJP’s Mahila Morcha plans to lock the West Bengal Commission for Women office on August 28 due to the commission’s inaction in the case.
He further stated that on August 29, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would protest outside the District Magistrate (DM) offices across all districts, demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
“Tomorrow, due to Krishna Janmashtami, we will not hold any protest. On August 28, the BJP’s Mahila Morcha will lock the West Bengal Commission for Women office as they are not taking any action. On August 29, we will protest outside the DM offices in all districts, demanding the resignation of CM Mamata Banerjee… We will continue our protests,” he told ANI.
In related protests, BJP workers held a ‘Mashal March’ in Paschim Medinipur, and women in Siliguri participated in a similar march, both demanding justice for the victim. In Bhangore, South 24 Parganas, local women and the Indian Secular Front (ISF) also held protests.
In Kolkata, Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar and BJP workers protested at Shyambazar, expressing outrage over the case.
The Bengali television industry also held a protest march from Tollygunge to Deshapriya Park on Sunday, demanding justice for the victim. People from every department of the television industry participated in the march.
Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Kunal Ghosh on Sunday expressed strong concerns over the progress of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder case, noting that only one arrest had been made by the Kolkata Police and questioning the role of the CBI.
“The rape-murder case must be solved quickly. So far, only one arrest has been made, and that too by Kolkata Police. What is the CBI doing? As the investigation drags on, politics is taking over,” Ghosh told ANI.
Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar claimed on Sunday that the people of West Bengal would topple Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee from power and immerse her in the River Ganga over her handling of the Kolkata rape-murder case.
“The government is afraid of this student movement, and they want to suppress the people’s voice. But the students of West Bengal have awakened… By uprooting Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee from power, the people of the state will immerse her in the River Ganga,” Majumdar told ANI.
He added that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would continue protesting until justice is served.
“Today is the last day of our protest here, but it is not the last day of our movement. There will be more protests in the future. I will address the gathering today at around 4 PM and announce further programs. The BJP will remain on the streets until justice is served,” he added.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Anti-Corruption Branch announced on Sunday that they had uncovered substantial evidence in their corruption probe against former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandeep Ghosh.
When asked if they had found any concrete evidence, a CBI official responded, “There is a lot.”
The CBI initiated a corruption investigation against former principal Sandeep Ghosh by filing an FIR on Saturday.
On Friday, the Calcutta High Court transferred the investigation of financial irregularities involving Dr. Sandip Ghosh, previously handled by a Special Investigation Team (SIT), to the CBI.
In a related development, Parimal Dey, a teacher from Alipurduar in West Bengal, who was honoured with the Banga Ratna award by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in 2019, has decided to return the award over the state government’s response to the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder incident.
Speaking about his decision to ANI, Parimal said, “I have decided to return the Banga Ratna award. Given the protests in Bengal and beyond, my conscience tells me that I should return it. I support the protest. The way she (Mamata Banerjee) is running the administration is not right.”
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court ordered the security of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital to be handed over to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) while hearing the suo motu case concerning the rape and murder of the trainee doctor.
The trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9. (ANI)
