New Delhi [India], July 31 (ANI): Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that he observed a “Maun Vrat” in Parliament as the opposition demanded answers on US President Donald Trump’s repeated claims regarding “ceasefire” between India and Pakistan.
“Modi had observed a silent fast in the Parliament on Trump’s statements on CEASEFIRE. Now will Modi remain silent on the baseless allegations made by Trump on India? Narendra Modi, Nation comes first and we are always with the nation,” Kharge posted on X.
Speaking on the issue of the US announcing 25 per cent tariffs on India, saying that this would affect the country’s trade, MSMEs and farmers. “This is how your friend — “Namaste Trump” and “Abki Baar Trump Sarkar” rewarded our country for your friendship?” he jibed.
“Trump has imposed 25% Tariff + Penalty on us. This will harm the country’s trade, MSMEs and farmers will also be adversely affected. Many industries will suffer huge losses. Your ministers have been talking about negotiating a trade deal with the US for months. Some even camped in Washington for several days,” Kharge added.
Highlighting the reasons given by Trump for imposing tariffs, the Congress chief argued that it was a severe blow to India’s national policy of “strategic autonomy,” emphasising the importance of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).
“The US President has given the reason for the tariff as: India’s oil import from Russia, India’s purchase of weapons from Russia, India’s membership of BRICS, BRICS’ attack on US dollar. This is a severe blow to India’s national policy of ‘Strategic Autonomy’. History is witness that Non-Alignment has been a very important policy for us. All governments, irrespective of the party, have strengthened friendship with the countries of the world in the interest of the country,” Kharge said.
He further narrated that former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh got a nuclear waiver from 45 countries, including the US. Kharge reminded that India had other options to procure nuclear fuel and material other than the US.
“During the UPA government, Manmohan Singh got us nuclear waiver from 45 countries including the US. The US supported us. For that, they changed their law. But India was not bound to take nuclear fuel and material only from the US. Our options were open. Your government’s foreign policy has dealt a severe blow to that national policy,” he said.
“Trump is talking about doing a deal with Pakistan on Oil Reserves. He is threatening India. And you are sitting silently. We are worried about this new America-China-Pakistan Axis. Instead of worrying about PR, Modi government should worry about the country,” he added.
Earlier today, Trump claimed that he did not care about India’s dealings with Russia.
Trump further warned that Deputy Chair of the Security Council of Russia and former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev should watch his words and not enter dangerous territory.
“I don’t care what India does with Russia. They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care. We have done very little business with India, their tariffs are too high, among the highest in the world. Likewise, Russia and the USA do almost no business together. Let’s keep it that way, and tell Medvedev, the failed former President of Russia, who thinks he’s still President, to watch his words. He’s entering very dangerous territory!” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
During a debate in Lok Sabha, PM Modi on Tuesday said that no leader in the world told India to stop Operation Sindoor, carried out to retaliate against the Pahalgam terror attack.
“No leader in the world told India to stop its operation. On the night of May 9, the Vice President of America tried to talk to me. He tried for an hour, but I was in a meeting with my army, so I could not pick up his call. Later, I called him back. The Vice President of America told me on the phone that Pakistan is going to launch a big attack. My answer was that if Pakistan has this intention, it will cost them a lot. If Pakistan attacks, we will respond by launching a big attack. This was my answer,” PM Modi said. (ANI)
