Guwahati (Assam) [India], January 20 (ANI): Assam Congress President Bhupen Kumar Borah criticized Assam Police for registering a case against Congress MP Rahul Gandhi over his “Fighting Indian state” remark during the inauguration of ‘Indira Bhavan.’
Borah accused the police of becoming a tool of the BJP, asserting that despite filing three complaints against communal speeches by Himanta Biswa Sarma, no case had been registered.
“During the inauguration of ‘Indira Bhavan’, the speech that Rahul Gandhi gave, Assam Police registered a case based on it. This makes it clear that the Police have become the BJP’s tool…we had given 3 complaints against the communal speeches by Himanta Biswa Sarma but until now no case has been registered…,” he said.
He also raised concerns over the CBI and ED’s alleged inaction against leaders of the ruling party, questioning why the investigation into Sarma’s involvement in the Saradha chit fund scam was not progressing.
“CBI and ED never go after leaders of the ruling party, they are supposed to be neutral. Why is the case against Himanta Biswa Sarma in the Saradha chit fund scam, not being investigated?…,” he said
Earlier on Sunday, an FIR was registered against Congress leader and LoP Rahul Gandhi at the Pan Bazar Police Station in Guwahati.
Rahul Gandhi stated, “The BJP and RSS have captured every single institution, and we are now fighting the BJP, the RSS, and the Indian State itself”. He made the statement on January 15, 2025, during the inauguration of the Congress Party’s new headquarters at Kotla Road in Delhi.
The complainant, Monjit Chetia, alleged that Gandhi’s statement crossed the limits of permissible free speech and posed a serious threat to public order and national security.
Chetia claimed that Gandhi’s words were an attempt to delegitimize the authority of the State, creating a dangerous narrative that could provoke unrest and separatist sentiments.
“By declaring that his fight is against the “Indian State itself,” the accused has consciously incited subversive activities and rebellion among the populace. This is an attempt to delegitimize the authority of the State and to portray it as a hostile force, thereby creating a dangerous narrative that could provoke unrest and separatist sentiments,” Chetia said in his complaints according to the FIR.
Chetia also suggested that Gandhi’s remarks were motivated by frustration over repeated electoral failures. As the Leader of the Opposition, Gandhi had a responsibility to maintain public confidence in democratic institutions, but instead, he chose to exploit his platform to spread falsehoods and provoke rebellion, endangering the unity and sovereignty of India.
Chetia complained that Rahul Gandhi’s remarks represent a direct challenge to the integrity and stability of the Indian State, warranting immediate legal action under Section 152 of the BNS. (ANI)
